The German Occupation Memorial

The Reichsadler (which is the Imperial Eagle) was one of the symbols of the Nazi regime. As you can see in the picture the Reichsadler representing  the Nazis, is standing over Angel Gabriel which in this scene represents the Hungarian people. This monument tries to depict the Hungarian as victims, being attack by a ruthless animal. But this was not the case. I give deeper insight in earlier post.

Protest

In front of the German occupation memorial is this protest piece done by the Jewish community of Budapest. It is items from Holocaust victims. The items are random everyday items, things like shoes or hair brushes, there is also pictures and poems of the victims. This is a direct protest to the memorial. Some believe that the memorial is trying to whitewash the things that Hungery did during the war. During WW2 Hungery fought on the side of the Nazis,  but the memorial depicts the Hungarians as victims.  Not as allies of the Nazis. This angers the Jewish community because the they feel like the Hungarian state had as much to do with the deaths of Hungarian Jews as the Nazis. When I was there, their was also some speakers and a small rally in support of the Jewish community.

The German Occupation Memorial

The memorial  is dedicated to the Hungarian victims of the Nazis during ww2,  it is located in  Szabadság Ter.

The Statue Of József Eötvös

Eövtös was  a hungrarian statesmen's, who served as minster of education, and religion, he was also a writer and an advocate for the Jewish community of Budapest. All of this during the height of Austro-Hungarian empire.
This is  quite an interesting pictures. At the foot of the statue are to elder gentleman playing traditional music. It is a common sight throughout Budapest to see street performers, it seems like in every corner there is someone performing. It might seem annoying but all the performers where very polite, unlike other places in Europe. The other interesting thing is the young women with her bike. She was waiting for a friend or a date.  In a lot of places in Europe  statues are used as meeting places. Statues are important landmarks within European  cityscapes.  While in the united states they are overlooked. In Europe they are essential part of the feel of the city.

Hungary From The Air

I flew from Athens to Budapest on one of the most unique airlines. It was a budget airline called wizz air. Yes you heard me right, wizz air. There where no assigned seats and the checking in was a nightmare. It seemed like the company only had 5 employees. But on the plus side the tickets where very cheap.
